Tensions between Israel and Lebanon continue to escalate as the Israeli military announced that its forces carried out an overnight operation targeting what it described as a Hezbollah “terrorist infrastructure” in the southern Lebanese village of Blida. The operation, which took place under the cover of darkness, marks yet another episode in the ongoing confrontation between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, which has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict last year.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee confirmed that the raid was aimed at dismantling a Hezbollah base allegedly concealed within a civilian building. According to Adraee, Israeli troops identified a suspect inside the targeted structure and immediately began what he referred to as “procedures aimed at arresting him.”
However, the situation quickly escalated. “When a direct threat was identified to the force, shots were fired to remove the threat, and a hit was recorded,” Adraee said, emphasizing that the incident remains under investigation. The Israeli spokesperson further alleged that the building had “recently been used for Hezbollah terrorist activities under the cover of civilian infrastructure,” accusing the group of deliberately embedding itself among Lebanese civilians.
Adraee condemned what he called Hezbollah’s “reckless strategy” of using civilian areas to conduct military operations, arguing that such actions endanger local populations. “This incident is another example of Hezbollah’s modus operandi, which endangers the residents of Lebanon by exploiting civilian facilities for terrorist purposes,” he stated.
Lebanese sources have not yet released an official response to Israel’s claims, though local media outlets in southern Lebanon reported explosions overnight near Blida. Residents in nearby villages described heavy movement of Israeli drones and artillery fire across the border, which has been a flashpoint for repeated clashes over the past months.
This latest incident underscores the growing volatility along the Israel-Lebanon border, where hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have intensified in recent weeks. Both sides have exchanged artillery fire, airstrikes, and cross-border attacks, prompting fears of a wider regional conflict. Analysts warn that the increasing frequency of these confrontations could drag Lebanon deeper into instability, particularly as the country continues to face a severe economic and political crisis.
The Israeli government maintains that its actions are defensive, aimed at neutralizing threats from Hezbollah’s expanding presence near the border. Israeli officials have repeatedly accused Hezbollah of storing weapons, launching attacks, and operating out of civilian areas in violation of international law. Meanwhile, Hezbollah insists its actions are in response to Israel’s aggression and in solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Gaza conflict.
As investigations into the Blida operation continue, international observers are urging restraint on both sides to prevent further escalation. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which monitors the border area, has expressed concern over the growing violence and called for adherence to UN Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.
With both Israel and Hezbollah showing no signs of backing down, the situation along the border remains tense and unpredictable. The latest strike in Blida serves as yet another reminder of how fragile peace remains in the region and how quickly a single operation can ignite a broader confrontation.
