Nigeria vs Benin: Super Eagles Fight for Survival in Final FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier

Nigeria will face Benin in a decisive FIFA World Cup 2026 CAF qualifier that will determine who secures direct qualification from Group C. The Super Eagles, sitting third with 14 points, must defeat table-toppers Benin, who lead with 17 points, to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Anything less than victory will end Nigeria’s dream, while a win could see them qualify directly or enter the intercontinental playoff.

For Benin, history beckons. A win or draw in Uyo will seal their first-ever World Cup appearance, while even a narrow defeat could still suffice if South Africa fail to win their own fixture. Nigeria, however, are determined to reverse the 2-1 defeat they suffered to Benin in June 2024, where Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounie scored after Raphael Onyedika’s opener.

The Super Eagles’ preparations hit turbulence when their flight from South Africa to Uyo made an emergency landing in Angola after a cracked windshield. Despite the scare, the team is focused on the high-stakes clash. Coach Eric Chele will be without star winger Ademola Lookman, who is suspended, and defender Ola Aina, who remains injured. Star striker Victor Osimhen returns to lead the attack and says the team “will fight to the end.”

Benin coach Gernot Rohr will field his strongest lineup, with Mounie, Dossou, and Hountondji leading the charge. His side need just a point to make history. Nigeria, meanwhile, are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Osimhen spearheading the attack.

The stakes are enormous: only nine African teams will qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup, while the four best runners-up compete for one more slot. Nigeria, six-time World Cup participants, cannot afford another absence after missing Qatar 2022. For Benin, this could be the night they make history.
