Before his appointment, Cheikh Niang served as Senegal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he was widely recognized for his contributions to international diplomacy and advocacy on behalf of Africa. A seasoned career diplomat, Niang brings with him decades of experience from prestigious assignments, having served as Senegal’s Ambassador to Japan, the United States, and South Africa, as well as Consul General in New York. His appointment to this new position is expected to strengthen Senegal’s voice on the global stage while further enhancing bilateral and multilateral relations within Africa and beyond.

Nigeria’s top diplomat emphasized that the two nations will continue to collaborate closely on critical regional and global issues, including peacekeeping, security, economic development, climate action, and trade. He further highlighted that Nigeria looks forward to building on existing frameworks of cooperation to foster even stronger ties that will bring tangible benefits to the citizens of both countries.

The appointment of Cheikh Niang as Senegal’s new Foreign Minister is widely seen as a strategic move that will not only strengthen Senegal’s diplomatic posture but also contribute to Africa’s collective influence in global affairs. With his extensive background in international relations and diplomacy, Niang is expected to pursue policies that reinforce Senegal’s role as a key player in West Africa and a reliable partner on the international stage.

As Nigeria warmly congratulates Senegal’s new foreign minister, the development is being hailed as another opportunity to advance regional solidarity, enhance diplomatic synergy, and promote the shared vision of unity and progress across the African continent.
