A dramatic incident unfolded in Cape Town when South African MP Ian Cameron fired his gun in self-defence after he and two colleagues were violently ambushed in Philippi township on Tuesday. Cameron, along with fellow members of parliament’s police committee Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell, was returning from an unannounced visit to a police academy when their vehicle was attacked.
The assailants hurled bricks at the car, shattering its windows and injuring both Cameron and Gotsell. Cameron, who sustained broken teeth and a cut lip, retaliated with his licensed firearm, wounding one of the attackers before the MPs managed to escape to safety. Gotsell was briefly hospitalised after being struck on the head.
Police confirmed that two suspects, aged 16 and 18, were arrested one while seeking medical treatment in hospital and the other on a farm the following day. Authorities are still searching for a third suspect and are investigating attempted murder and attempted hijacking charges.
Speaking to broadcaster Newzroom Afrika, Cameron described the terrifying moment the first brick smashed into his face: “I realised that if we don’t do something, this can go really bad. So I did my best to act in self-defence with my firearm.”
The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s second-largest political party and part of the coalition government, condemned the attack, calling it proof of the country’s “out-of-control” crime crisis. South Africa continues to battle one of the world’s highest murder rates, with violent crime remaining a daily threat.
