The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the withdrawal of its criminal complaint against Ms. Comfort Emmanson, a passenger accused of unruly conduct aboard an Ibom Air flight, and has also reduced the flight ban imposed on Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1. The decision was made public by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, who stated that the resolutions followed extensive consultations with key aviation stakeholders, a review of the incidents, and consideration of the remorse expressed by those involved.

Keyamo confirmed that Ibom Air has formally agreed to withdraw its complaint against Ms. Emmanson, who was arrested over an August 10, 2025 incident on a Lagos-to-Uyo flight. According to the minister, when the police took her statement in the presence of her lawyer, she displayed sincere remorse for her actions. As a result of this development, the Airport Command and police prosecutors will begin the process of securing her release from Kirikiri Prison within the week. Additionally, the Airline Operators of Nigeria has agreed to lift the lifetime flight ban placed on her, with the official announcement expected shortly.

The August 10 altercation began when Emmanson refused to switch off her mobile phone as instructed by the flight crew. The situation escalated when she became physically aggressive, striking a flight attendant, prompting the airline to enforce its strict zero-tolerance policy for disruptive behaviour. She was eventually restrained and escorted off the aircraft at Murtala Mohammed International Airport. Ibom Air subsequently imposed a lifetime ban on her for both domestic and international flights.

On the ValueJet incident involving KWAM 1, which occurred on August 5, 2025, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the minister disclosed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has decided to reduce the musician’s flight ban to one month. KWAM 1 had reportedly attempted to board a ValueJet flight while carrying a prohibited flask believed to contain alcohol. When instructed to surrender it, he allegedly refused, poured its contents on airline and security staff, and proceeded onto the tarmac, obstructing aircraft taxiing and causing a significant delay in flight operations.

Following public apologies and demonstrations of penitence, the NCAA will also withdraw its criminal complaint against the musician. In an unusual turn, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) plans to engage KWAM 1 as an ambassador for airport security protocols to promote passenger compliance. The one-month suspension will also apply to ValueJet’s Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, with their licenses to be restored after undergoing a mandatory professional reappraisal.

Keyamo emphasized that these clemencies were granted purely on compassionate grounds and not influenced by political or sentimental pressures. “Government will never pander to base sentiments, politically motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws is involved. We have decided to draw a line after these clemencies,” he said.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, the ministry will organize a retreat next week to retrain aviation security personnel on managing disruptive passengers and de-escalating tense situations. Airlines will also hold dedicated sessions to address staff conduct towards travellers, ensuring that both passengers and crew members uphold safety and professionalism at all times.

This decision signals a rare moment of reconciliation in Nigeria’s aviation sector, balancing the enforcement of safety regulations with a measure of compassion for offenders who have shown remorse, while reinforcing the government’s commitment to maintaining order and security within the nation’s air transport system.
