The Nigerian Air Force has announced a significant victory against criminal gangs operating in Zamfara State, confirming that scores of armed bandits, including several notorious kingpins, were neutralized during a large-scale military operation. The deadly raid, which targeted the Makakkari forest in north-west Nigeria, followed extensive surveillance that revealed more than 400 gang members were gathering in preparation to attack a nearby village.
According to Air Force spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the coordinated assault combined precision aerial bombardments with decisive ground troop maneuvers, ensuring that those who attempted to flee the forest were intercepted and eliminated. The criminals, often referred to locally as “bandits,” have been linked to a string of violent attacks in the region, including mass kidnappings, killings, and ambushes on security personnel.
Over the last two weeks alone, armed gangs have wreaked havoc on several communities in Zamfara and its surroundings, killing scores of civilians, abducting numerous residents for ransom, and leaving at least 13 security personnel dead. Intelligence reports suggest that many of these gangs are motivated by financial gain but have also forged troubling alliances with jihadist insurgent groups that have been waging a deadly conflict in Nigeria’s northeast for over 16 years.
The Makakkari forest, long regarded as a notorious hideout for heavily armed criminal groups, has been a focus of multiple military offensives. Last month, Nigerian forces reportedly killed at least 95 gang members in another high-impact operation, yet the wave of violence in the region persists. Security experts say the latest offensive sends a strong message to criminal elements that the military is intensifying its efforts to dismantle their networks and restore peace in the troubled north-west.
The Nigerian Air Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities, dismantling organized crime, and neutralizing threats to national security. Residents of affected areas have welcomed the latest development, though they remain cautious, noting that previous victories have not completely halted the cycle of violence. Authorities continue to urge citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, as the fight against armed banditry and kidnapping-for-ransom operations presses on.
