President William Ruto has boldly proclaimed himself the most accomplished president Kenya has ever had since independence, highlighting his unique combination of political experience, academic credentials, and grassroots upbringing as proof of his transformative leadership. Speaking at State House, Nairobi, on August 4 during a meeting with Tharaka Nithi County officials, Ruto stated: “I’ve served as an MP for 15 years and as Deputy President for 10… Kenya has never had a president who is also a PhD holder and that’s me”.

Ruto traced his journey from a chicken vendor to Kenya’s commander-in-chief, emphasizing his lived understanding of citizens’ struggles. “I was born and raised in the grassroots. I understand Kenya’s problems. There has never been a president with my level of education, knowledge, and experience. That’s why I must perform,” he declared.

He claimed to embody the strengths of his predecessors, asserting: “I have Jomo Kenyatta’s courage, Moi’s understanding, Kibaki’s education, and the development plan I shared with Uhuru. With that combination, I have no excuse but to transform the nation,” remarks that drew applause from attendees.

The remarks come amid growing public pressure as the administration tackles economic headwinds including high public debt, inflation, and widespread protests linked to unpopular tax reforms and rising cost of living. Despite criticism, Ruto defended his administration’s reform agenda, arguing it is essential to stabilizing the economy and promoting development across sectors including infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

Ruto’s claim ignited mixed reactions: supporters lauded his confidence and academic pedigree, while critics decried the assertion as premature and tone‑deaf given ongoing economic challenges and public unrest. The debate continues to intensify as Kenya heads toward the 2027 elections, with many citizens watching closely to see whether Ruto’s self-assessment matches tangible outcomes.
