The latest round of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers delivered thrilling football as teams from across the continent battled for a spot in the prestigious tournament. Several nations showcased their talent and determination, while others were left reflecting on missed opportunities and poor performances.

In one of the most dominant displays of the day, Algeria pulled off an extraordinary 5-1 comeback victory against Togo. Despite conceding an early goal, the Desert Foxes quickly regrouped and launched a relentless attack. Riyad Mahrez, captain of the Algerian team, led by example, but it was Said Benrahma who stole the show, netting two goals to seal Algeria’s emphatic win. The victory strengthened Algeria’s position in the qualifiers, further solidifying their status as one of Africa’s top footballing nations.

On the other side of the continent, Zimbabwe secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Namibia, with Khama Billiat making an emotional return to international football. Billiat’s goal was the difference in the match, helping the Warriors secure all three points. Zimbabwe’s victory came as a boost for the team, who have been working hard to regain their form after a period of turbulence in the international football scene. Namibia, however, will be deeply disappointed with the result, especially considering their spirited performance in their maiden AFCON appearance earlier this year. The Namibian side has yet to collect any points in Group J, leaving them at the bottom of the standings and facing an uphill battle in the remaining matches.

Elsewhere, Ghana faced frustration in their goalless draw against Sudan. Despite creating numerous chances, the Black Stars failed to convert, leaving them stuck in third place in their group with just two points. Otto Addo’s side is now under immense pressure, as their qualification hopes hang in the balance. The missed opportunities in the match against Sudan were a bitter pill to swallow for Ghana, who have historically been one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

In other action, DR Congo managed to grind out a 1-0 win against Tanzania, keeping their qualifying campaign on track. The match was closely contested, with both teams fighting hard for control, but DR Congo’s persistence paid off with a crucial goal that secured the three points. Tanzania, despite their efforts, could not find a way past the Congolese defense and will need to regroup ahead of their next match.

Meanwhile, Botswana pulled off a surprising 1-0 victory over Cape Verde, a result that has shaken up their group. Cape Verde, often considered favorites in such matchups, struggled to find their rhythm and were ultimately undone by a well-organized Botswana side that capitalized on their chances. This win will give Botswana a significant confidence boost as they continue their qualification journey.

Burkina Faso also impressed with a commanding 4-1 win over Burundi at the Alassane Ouattara Ebimpe Olympic Stadium. Dango Ouattara led the charge for Burkina Faso, scoring a brace and ensuring his team’s dominant performance. The Burkinabé side looked sharp throughout the match, outclassing Burundi in every department and solidifying their position in the qualification standings.
