Marvel Studios has officially announced British actor David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, confirming that he will portray Prince T’Challa II in the highly anticipated “Black Panther III.” The announcement was made during the studio’s Hall H presentation at Comic-Con International 2026, drawing one of the event’s loudest reactions from fans.
Jonsson’s casting marks a new chapter for one of Marvel’s most influential franchises. Rather than recasting the original T’Challa following the death of actor Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Marvel has chosen to continue the story through T’Challa’s son, Prince T’Challa II, who was introduced in the closing scenes of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Director Ryan Coogler, who returns to helm the third installment, appeared on stage alongside Jonsson and cast members Letitia Wright, who reprises her role as Shuri, and Winston Duke, who returns as M’Baku. Coogler described the film as the next evolution of the Wakanda story, focusing on legacy, leadership and the responsibilities that come with protecting the fictional African nation.
Marvel confirmed that “Black Panther III” is scheduled for theatrical release on Dec. 15, 2028, although details about the plot remain under wraps.
Jonsson, whose recent performances in “Industry,” “Alien: Romulus” and “The Long Walk” have earned widespread critical acclaim, said joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe was both an honor and a significant responsibility.
“I understand what this character means to so many people around the world,” Jonsson told fans during the presentation. “I’m committed to honoring that legacy while bringing something new to the role.”
The Black Panther franchise has become one of Marvel’s most culturally significant film series. The original “Black Panther” (2018), starring the late Chadwick Boseman, became the first superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned global recognition for its celebration of African culture, identity and innovation.
Following Boseman’s death, Marvel opted not to recast T’Challa out of respect for the actor’s legacy. Instead, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” explored themes of grief, succession and national resilience while introducing a younger T’Challa, setting the stage for the franchise’s future.
Industry analysts say Marvel’s decision to center the next chapter on Prince T’Challa II allows the studio to preserve Boseman’s legacy while ensuring continuity within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The move also positions a new generation of characters to carry forward one of the franchise’s most recognizable symbols.
Beyond the Black Panther announcement, Marvel used its Comic-Con presentation to unveil several other projects planned for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including new casting announcements and updates on upcoming films. The event reinforced the studio’s strategy of expanding its interconnected storytelling while introducing fresh characters and narratives.
