Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain have been named India’s flagbearers and will lead the country’s 124-member contingent into the OVO Hydro Arena on July 23.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced the appointment, with President PT Usha describing it as a well-deserved honour that recognises both athletes’ outstanding achievements and their contribution to Indian sport. She also highlighted the significance of having two female athletes carry the national flag, calling it an inspiration for Team India.

Mirabai Chanu enters the Games as one of India’s strongest medal hopes. The Olympic silver medallist and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games champion has remained among the world’s top weightlifters.

Joining her is boxer Lovlina Borgohain, the Olympic bronze medallist and 2023 world champion, who is also expected to challenge for gold in Glasgow.

India’s delegation features 124 athletes, including both able-bodied and para-athletes, competing across 10 sports such as athletics, boxing, weightlifting, cycling, gymnastics, judo, lawn bowls and swimming.

The appointment of Chanu and Borgohain reflects not only their remarkable sporting achievements but also the growing impact of women in international sport.
