Romania to Review US Request to Use Local Air Base for Iran Operations

Romania is reviewing a request from the United States to use one of its military air bases for operations linked to the conflict involving Iran, according to government and political sources.

President Nicușor Dan has convened the country’s Supreme Council of National Defence to discuss the issue and assess the security implications for Romania. The meeting will evaluate whether to allow U.S. aircraft and possibly additional military capabilities to operate from Romanian territory.

The request reportedly concerns access to the strategic Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, a major NATO facility on the Black Sea that already hosts American forces. The base has been used in past military operations and serves as an important logistical hub for U.S. and NATO activities in Eastern Europe.

Romanian officials are also expected to review the broader implications of the Middle East conflict, including potential impacts on national security and the country’s energy market.

Any decision to allow additional U.S. deployments or operations would likely require parliamentary approval under Romanian law, as it involves the presence of foreign troops and military activities on national territory.

Security analysts say granting the request could strengthen Romania’s strategic partnership with the United States and reinforce its role within NATO. However, it could also expose the country to greater geopolitical risks if tensions with Iran escalate further.

The discussions come amid heightened international tensions as the United States and its allies respond to developments in the Middle East, prompting governments across Europe to reassess their security posture and military cooperation with Washington.
