The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, has removed a bishop in San Diego after allegations that he misappropriated about $250,000 from church funds.

According to officials from the Vatican, the decision followed an internal investigation into financial misconduct involving the bishop, who had been responsible for overseeing administrative and financial matters within the local diocese.

Church authorities said the bishop is accused of diverting approximately $250,000 intended for church operations and charitable activities. The funds were allegedly redirected for unauthorized purposes, prompting an inquiry by Vatican officials.

Following the investigation, the pope approved the bishop’s dismissal from his leadership role in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego. The Vatican said the action was taken to uphold accountability and protect the integrity of church governance.

The case has drawn attention within the Catholic community in San Diego, where parishioners expressed concern about financial transparency and oversight. Church leaders have said measures are being put in place to review financial procedures and ensure stronger accountability within the diocese.

While the bishop has been removed from office, Vatican officials noted that further canonical procedures could still take place depending on the outcome of the ongoing review of the allegations.

The Vatican emphasized that the church maintains a policy of investigating accusations of financial misconduct and taking disciplinary action when necessary to maintain trust among the faithful.
