Somalia has announced the termination of all existing agreements with the United Arab Emirates, effectively annulling deals covering port operations, security cooperation, and defence. The decision, taken by the Council of Ministers and made public on Monday, marks a significant escalation in tensions between Mogadishu and Abu Dhabi.
According to the Somali government, the move was prompted by what it described as harmful actions that undermine the country’s unity, sovereignty, and political independence. Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi elaborated on the decision in a statement posted on X, saying it was based on reliable reports and evidence pointing to practices linked to the UAE that threaten the sovereignty of the Somali Republic and its national cohesion.
While full details of the alleged actions were not disclosed, Somali officials have in recent years voiced concerns over foreign involvement in domestic political and security affairs, particularly in relation to port management agreements and cooperation with federal member states. The cancellation of these agreements signals a clear intent by the federal government to reassert central authority and safeguard national decision making.
The UAE has been an influential external partner in Somalia, with investments in key ports and involvement in security and training initiatives. The abrupt severing of ties is therefore likely to have implications for regional diplomacy, economic activity, and security cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
Somalia’s leadership has framed the decision as part of a broader effort to protect national interests and prevent external interference. The government has reiterated its commitment to engaging with international partners on the basis of mutual respect, transparency, and full recognition of Somalia’s sovereignty.
As the situation develops, attention will focus on how the UAE responds and whether the move will reshape Somalia’s relationships with other regional and international actors. For now, the decision underscores Mogadishu’s determination to assert control over its strategic assets and political direction amid a complex regional environment.
