The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a new security alert, urging American citizens and other foreigners in the country to remain vigilant amid heightened terror threats.

In an advisory released on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the embassy warned that terrorist groups such as al-Shabaab continue to pose a persistent danger in Nairobi and across Kenya. Potential targets include hotels, restaurants, embassies, malls, markets, schools, police stations, entertainment spots, and places of worship all of which have been previously attacked in the past.

The embassy highlighted sensitive dates such as August 7, September 11, September 21, and October 7, which mark tragic anniversaries of past terror attacks, including the 1998 US Embassy bombing in Nairobi, the 9/11 attacks in the United States, the 2013 Westgate Mall siege, and the October 7, 2023, assault on Israel by Hamas.

“Terrorist groups can attack with little to no warning,” the embassy cautioned, stressing that the threat remains ongoing and unpredictable.

To ensure safety, the embassy advised US citizens and other foreign nationals to adopt strict personal security measures such as avoiding large crowds, steering clear of demonstrations, maintaining a low profile, being alert in high-traffic public areas, and closely monitoring local news updates.

The alert comes as Kenya continues to face intermittent terror threats from al-Shabaab militants based in Somalia, who have staged several deadly attacks in the past decade.
