A devastating fire at an Islamic school in Kauran Namoda, Zamfara state, northern Nigeria, has resulted in the death of at least 17 children. The incident occurred late Tuesday night when flames from a nearby house engulfed the school dormitory where the children were sleeping.

Numerous other students sustained injuries and were promptly transported to local health centers for urgent medical attention. The fire spread rapidly, exacerbated by the close proximity of the structures and the late-night timing when most were asleep.

Local emergency services and authorities responded swiftly but were unable to prevent the high casualty rate. Yahaya Mahi, an eyewitness, described the challenges faced by rescuers to BBC Hausa, noting, “Even if the firefighters had come on time, reaching the house would’ve been difficult due to the tight road leading to the house.”

Following the tragedy, Mannir Haidara, a local official, announced plans to inspect other Islamic schools in the region to assess and mitigate fire risks. “We’ll take measures to prevent another occurrence of this nature,” Haidara stated, signaling a commitment to ensuring the safety of educational institutions.

The emotional toll of the disaster was palpable among the affected families. A father of one of the deceased students shared his grief with BBC Hausa, expressing profound sorrow but also finding solace in his faith, stating that his belief in God was a source of comfort during this dark time.
