A tragic bomb explosion rocked the Bassa community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of one person and severe injuries to four others. The incident, which occurred as the victims were heading to their farms, marks the second such explosion in the community within a month, heightening concerns over the safety and security of residents.

Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion occurred unexpectedly, leaving the victims caught in its devastating impact. Ahmed Almustapha, a resident of the community and relative to three of the injured victims, described the harrowing scene, noting that three of the survivors had their legs severely damaged in the blast. They are currently receiving critical medical treatment at the IBB Specialist Hospital.

“This is the second bomb explosion we are experiencing this month in Bassa,” Almustapha said. “Two weeks ago, a similar incident claimed the life of a farmer on his way to his farmland. Now, another person has died, and four others are suffering from serious injuries. We are living in fear, and it’s becoming very difficult for us to carry on with our lives.”

The recurring explosions in Shiroro Local Government Area underscore the escalating security challenges faced by communities in Niger State. The region has long grappled with violent attacks, including banditry, kidnapping, and conflicts that have disrupted the livelihoods of rural populations. The latest bomb incidents add another layer of insecurity, raising questions about the origin of these explosives and the apparent targeting of farmers, who form the backbone of the local economy.

For communities like Bassa, farming is not only a way of life but also the primary means of sustenance. The fear instilled by these explosions has left many residents hesitant to return to their farmlands, exacerbating food insecurity and economic hardship in the region.

“We depend on our farms to survive,” Almustapha lamented. “Now, people are afraid to even step out of their homes, let alone go to the farms. If this situation continues, hunger and poverty will hit us even harder.”

In the wake of the incident, residents have appealed to both the Niger State Government and the federal government to take immediate action to secure the area and provide necessary support to victims. Community leaders are urging authorities to investigate the source of the explosives and put measures in place to prevent further tragedies.

Almustapha emphasized the need for government intervention to restore confidence among farmers and enable them to return to their fields. “We need urgent help. The government must investigate what is happening in our community. Without immediate intervention, people will abandon their farms, and the consequences will be severe for the entire region.”

The Niger State Government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest explosion, but the incident adds to growing calls for enhanced security in rural communities. Stakeholders have repeatedly urged authorities to adopt a comprehensive approach that includes deploying more security personnel, improving intelligence gathering, and supporting victims of violence.
