A devastating explosion tore through a café at the General Kaahie Police Academy in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, on Monday, resulting in at least 10 confirmed deaths. The blast, which local media reports suggest was the work of a suicide bomber, has sent shockwaves through the city, with many fearing the final death toll may rise as emergency teams continue their rescue operations.

Eyewitnesses on the scene described a horrific explosion that shook the academy, leaving behind scenes of chaos and destruction. “It was a massive explosion, and there are so many people affected,” said one witness. Authorities quickly sealed off the area as security forces and rescue teams rushed in to assist the victims and assess the situation. The explosion, which reportedly targeted the busy café within the police academy’s compound, occurred during a peak time, exacerbating the scale of the casualties.

According to initial reports, a suicide bomber infiltrated the academy’s premises before detonating the explosive device. While the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, local media outlets have reported that at least 10 people have lost their lives, with many others injured. The attack has raised fresh concerns about the security situation in Mogadishu, a city that has long struggled with the threat of extremist violence.

Security officials in Mogadishu are treating the explosion as a terrorist attack. Though no group has yet claimed responsibility, suspicion has already fallen on al-Shabaab, the militant Islamist group that has carried out similar attacks in the past. Al-Shabaab has been active in Somalia for over a decade, attempting to overthrow the Somali government and impose a strict form of Islamic law across the country. The group has consistently targeted government institutions, security forces, and civilians in its quest to destabilize Somalia and expand its influence.

The General Kaahie Police Academy, where the attack took place, is one of the most significant training institutions for Somalia’s police force. The academy plays a crucial role in training security personnel to combat the persistent threat posed by terrorist organizations such as al-Shabaab. Monday’s bombing represents a direct attack on Somalia’s security apparatus and highlights the continued challenges the nation faces in securing key institutions.

Somalia’s security forces have been locked in an ongoing battle with al-Shabaab, which remains a potent force in the country despite years of military efforts to dismantle the group. Al-Shabaab continues to control large swathes of rural Somalia, from which it launches frequent attacks against government forces and civilians. The capital, Mogadishu, has seen multiple high-profile attacks over the years, often targeting government officials, military installations, and busy public places.

The Somali government has condemned the attack, vowing to bring those responsible to justice. In a statement, the Ministry of Security said, “We will not be intimidated by these acts of terror. Our forces will continue to stand firm in the face of these threats, and we will ensure that those responsible are held accountable.” The ministry also urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces as investigations into the attack continue.

Meanwhile, rescue operations at the scene are ongoing, with ambulances and medical personnel working tirelessly to save lives. Hospitals across Mogadishu have been placed on high alert to accommodate the influx of casualties. Health officials have called for blood donations, as many of the wounded are reported to be in critical condition.
