Protesters in Togo have called for the restoration of the country’s previous constitution, reflecting growing political tensions over recent constitutional changes and the direction of governance.

Demonstrators gathered to express opposition to the constitutional reforms, arguing that the previous framework provided stronger democratic safeguards and greater accountability. Protest organizers urged authorities to reconsider the changes through an inclusive political process.

The protests come amid ongoing debate over constitutional reforms that have reshaped aspects of Togo’s political system. Supporters of the changes say they are intended to strengthen governance and improve institutional functioning, while critics argue they could alter the country’s political balance and weaken democratic oversight.

Security personnel monitored the demonstrations, and authorities called for public order while urging protesters to remain peaceful. There were no immediate reports of the full extent of arrests or injuries linked to the demonstrations.

Political analysts say the developments highlight the importance of dialogue between the government, opposition parties and civil society to address concerns over constitutional reforms and preserve political stability.

Regional observers have emphasized the need for respect for constitutional processes, fundamental freedoms and the right to peaceful assembly, while encouraging all parties to resolve differences through lawful and inclusive engagement.

The protests underscore continuing public interest in constitutional governance in Togo, where debates over political reforms remain central to the country’s democratic development. Authorities have not indicated whether the government intends to revisit the constitutional changes in response to the demonstrations.
