South African football is mourning the death of Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams, a midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team, played a key role in the country’s historic World Cup campaign. He featured in all three group-stage matches, helping South Africa reach the knockout stage for the first time before the team was eliminated by Canada in the Round of 32.
The South African Ministry of Sport confirmed his death, while Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), and FIFA President Gianni Infantino paid tribute to the talented midfielder. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie described Adams as “one of South African football’s brightest young talents,” whose loss would be deeply felt across the nation.
Police have opened an investigation after Adams was found dead at a property in Cape Town’s Schotsche Kloof area. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death, and an autopsy is pending. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.
Born in Cape Town, Adams rose through the ranks at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns, where he helped the club win the CAF Champions League. He also earned international recognition with Bafana Bafana, making a significant contribution during the World Cup qualifiers and the tournament itself.
