The government of Greece has called for a long term and sustainable solution to guarantee the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, amid rising tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran.

Greek officials said ensuring freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway is critical for global trade and energy security, stressing the need for coordinated international action to prevent disruptions.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital maritime routes, with a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments passing through the narrow channel connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.

Athens emphasized that any long term solution should focus on stability, security, and adherence to international law, while avoiding escalation in the already volatile Middle East.

Greek officials also highlighted the importance of protecting merchant shipping and ensuring that commercial vessels can operate without fear of attacks or blockades.

The call comes as several countries consider measures to safeguard maritime routes, including potential naval deployments and enhanced security coordination.

Analysts say Greece’s position reflects broader concerns among maritime nations about the economic risks posed by instability in the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a key chokepoint for global energy supplies.
