100,000 Lebanese Seek Shelter After Israeli Evacuation Warnings, UN Says

About 100,000 people in Lebanon have fled to shelters following what a United Nations official described as “unprecedented” evacuation warnings issued by Israel, as tensions escalate in the ongoing conflict between United Nations, Israel, and the Iran backed militant group Hezbollah.

The warnings ordered civilians to leave large areas across southern Lebanon and parts of the capital, Beirut, prompting thousands of families to abandon their homes and seek safety in temporary shelters and public buildings. According to UN officials, the number of displaced people could rise rapidly as military operations intensify.

The evacuation notices were issued ahead of Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions. The Israeli military warned residents in several densely populated districts to evacuate immediately, sparking panic and massive traffic as people attempted to flee the affected areas.

Humanitarian agencies say the sudden displacement is putting severe pressure on Lebanon’s already fragile infrastructure. Many shelters are overcrowded, and some displaced families have been forced to sleep in cars or along roadsides while searching for safe accommodation.

The escalation comes amid a broader regional conflict that has spread across parts of the Middle East, raising fears of a deepening humanitarian crisis. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has warned that the situation could worsen quickly as violence continues and more civilians flee areas under threat of bombardment.

International officials have also expressed concern that large scale evacuation orders could raise questions under international humanitarian law, particularly regarding the forced movement of civilians during armed conflict. Calls for restraint and de escalation have intensified as global leaders monitor the rapidly deteriorating situation.

As fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies, aid groups say urgent humanitarian assistance will be needed to support the growing number of displaced civilians in Lebanon. The unfolding crisis highlights the risk that the conflict could trigger one of the region’s largest displacement emergencies in recent years.
