The Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, hosted the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Nigeria, Her Excellency Ambassador (Mrs) Miriam Morales Palmero, on Tuesday, 28 January 2026, at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja. The meeting provided a platform to review the current state of Nigeria–Cuba relations, exchange perspectives on pressing international issues, and reaffirm shared commitments to peace, multilateralism, and the rule of international law.

Ambassador Morales Palmero expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s longstanding support, noting that the two countries’ cordial and principled ties have been particularly evident within multilateral forums. She provided an update on developments in Latin America, highlighting regional implications and the importance of international cooperation. The Cuban envoy underscored Cuba’s commitment to peaceful engagement, social development, universal healthcare, free education, and gender inclusion, while reaffirming the nation’s openness to dialogue based on mutual respect and non-interference.

During the meeting, Ambassador Morales Palmero also briefed Ambassador Ahmed on plans for a proposed high-level visit to Nigeria by the Vice President of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa, following the African Union Summit. The visit is intended to follow up on previous high-level engagements and to further strengthen political, economic, and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

In his response, Ambassador Ahmed welcomed the Cuban Ambassador and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its relationship with Cuba. He emphasized Nigeria’s firm support for peace, security, and the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law. He also assured the Cuban delegation of Nigeria’s solidarity and constructive engagement in multilateral frameworks to address shared global challenges.

Ambassador Ahmed highlighted Nigeria’s active participation in multilateral diplomacy, including engagements within the United Nations and other international platforms, and stressed the importance of cooperation among developing countries in addressing global security, development, and human rights concerns.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their mutual commitment to strengthening Nigeria–Cuba relations for the benefit of their peoples and to sustaining collaboration on regional and global issues of shared interest.
