Ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s upcoming state visit to Türkiye, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, undertook his first official visit to Ankara on Monday, holding high-level discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. The talks focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation across political, economic, security, and multilateral dimensions, signaling a new phase in the strategic partnership between the two nations.

During the discussions, Minister Fidan commended Nigeria’s leadership in promoting regional stability, peace, and economic prosperity in West Africa, highlighting its active role in regional and continental frameworks. Tuggar, in turn, emphasized Nigeria’s interest in expanding trade and investment with Türkiye, identifying sectors such as construction, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure as priority areas for Turkish companies. Both ministers recognized the steady growth in economic relations and underscored the need for structured public-private engagement to unlock further potential.

Security cooperation also featured prominently in the agenda. The ministers discussed opportunities to strengthen collaboration in military affairs and the defence industry, reflecting mutual interest in enhancing regional security and building capacity within their armed forces.

The visit underscores the increasingly strategic character of Nigeria–Türkiye relations, anchored in shared principles of sovereignty, institutional cooperation, and pragmatic partnership. Both sides expressed confidence that their strengthened engagement would yield tangible outcomes in trade, investment, security, and multilateral cooperation, setting the stage for President Tinubu’s state visit to further deepen ties between the two countries.
