Eight people have died following a tragic road crash that occurred opposite Unity Bank along Zaria Road in Jos, the Plateau State capital. The accident happened in the early hours of Thursday and involved a trailer and a bus transporting students of the University of Jos.

According to eyewitness accounts, the bus was conveying eleven occupants when the collision took place. They explained that the impact of the crash was severe, leaving several passengers trapped as residents and first responders attempted to rescue survivors. Seven people were confirmed dead at the scene before emergency services arrived.

Another victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. However, medical personnel later confirmed that the individual did not survive, bringing the total number of casualties to eight. The remaining three occupants are receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries, and their conditions are being closely monitored by hospital authorities.

Residents in the area described the incident as devastating, noting that Zaria Road has witnessed several serious accidents in recent months. They called for increased traffic enforcement and improved safety measures, especially during early morning and late night hours when heavy duty vehicles often move through the corridor at high speed.

Officials from law enforcement agencies have begun an investigation into the circumstances that led to the collision. Preliminary findings are expected to determine whether human error, mechanical failure, excessive speed, or poor visibility contributed to the incident.

The University of Jos community is said to be in shock following the news. Several students gathered on campus to mourn those who lost their lives, while university authorities are preparing an official statement and making arrangements to support affected families.

The tragedy has once again renewed conversations about road safety, the state of transport infrastructure, and the need for continuous enforcement of traffic regulations across Nigerian highways. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise patience, prioritize caution, and adhere strictly to safety guidelines in order to reduce avoidable loss of life.
