Police in Gauteng have made a major breakthrough in the investigation into the deadly tavern shooting in Zithobeni, Bronkhorstspruit, which left five people dead and six others injured earlier this month. According to authorities, the Gauteng police’s Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation Unit, in collaboration with members of the Bronkhorstspruit police, successfully apprehended one of the main suspects on Tuesday in Zithobeni. Police confirmed that the suspect will appear before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he faces five counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder.
The tavern attack, which occurred on October 5, has been described by witnesses as a terrifying ordeal. It reportedly began when two men, known to some members of the community, entered the tavern and confronted one of the patrons, demanding that he surrender his licensed firearm. During the confrontation, a gunshot went off, causing panic among the patrons. As terrified customers fled for safety, the suspects allegedly opened fire indiscriminately, hitting several people both inside and outside the establishment.
Police investigations revealed that the targeted patron, who possessed the licensed firearm, was among those injured during the chaos.
