Nigeria has taken a major step forward in its digital transformation journey with the official launch of the Apolitical Government AI Campus, a global hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) excellence in government, supported by Google.org. The programme, delivered in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) and Google, aims to equip Nigerian public servants and policymakers with cutting-edge AI knowledge and skills to drive innovation, improve governance, and accelerate economic growth.

The training initiative marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to building a digitally skilled public sector capable of harnessing emerging technologies to deliver smarter, more efficient, and citizen-centered public services. With the world rapidly moving toward AI-driven economies, the Nigerian government recognizes that an informed and technologically equipped civil service is key to ensuring sustainable national progress in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

AI is fast becoming a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital strategy, and recent research by Apolitical reveals that while 72% of government leaders across various countries are currently running AI pilot projects, more than half admit they lack a comprehensive framework or strategy for AI integration. This gap underscores the urgent need for structured AI capacity-building initiatives, particularly within the public sector, where technology adoption has the potential to transform governance and service delivery. According to Apolitical, every dollar invested in AI could yield over eight dollars in economic value—demonstrating the immense potential of AI to boost productivity, efficiency, and innovation.

Speaking during the launch event in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized the government’s dedication to embedding AI competencies across all levels of the public sector. “We see Artificial Intelligence as a major driver of productivity across our key sectors,” Dr. Tijani said. “We have been putting resources into ensuring that we can support our civil servants and our public service in a manner that AI can become something that is native to them—whether it’s to accelerate and shorten the time we spend on administrating our processes, or to improve how we deliver to our people. This is why we are extremely excited about this opportunity and the support from Google.”

The Apolitical Government AI Campus will serve as a comprehensive platform for Nigerian public servants to gain practical, government-specific AI training. Participants will have access to online courses covering AI fundamentals, data-driven decision-making, and leadership for digital transformation. They will also benefit from expert-led workshops, real-world case studies, and policy frameworks tailored to the unique challenges of governance. Additionally, the programme connects participants to a global AI in Government community, a network of public servants and policymakers worldwide who exchange insights, experiences, and best practices on AI implementation in government operations.

In his remarks, Olumide Balogun, Google’s West Africa Director, highlighted the company’s commitment to empowering the Nigerian public sector through technology and knowledge sharing. “Championing Nigeria’s digital transformation means investing in the people who shape its future,” Balogun said. “By working hand-in-hand with public sector leaders and practitioners, we are not only providing technical resources but sharing knowledge that empowers them to deliver better, more efficient government services. Through AI, Nigerian communities can benefit from smarter solutions, improved social outcomes, and greater inclusion in a rapidly changing digital economy.”

Chris Ferguson, Vice President at Apolitical, described the programme as a pioneering effort that lays the foundation for meaningful AI adoption in government. “Structured training is the cornerstone for successful AI adoption in government. This initiative is a pioneering effort that will equip Nigerian public servants with the capabilities to lead the digital transformation with confidence and foresight,” he said.

The launch of the Apolitical Government AI Campus in Nigeria is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem and foster a culture of technological innovation within government. Over the past year, Google and the FMCIDE have collaborated on various initiatives to expand internet access, establish local AI innovation hubs, and enhance digital literacy among Nigerian youth and professionals. These combined efforts are designed to create a robust AI ecosystem that supports economic growth, promotes inclusive development, and positions Nigeria as a leading technology hub in Africa.
