100 Reputable Women of African Descent 2025: Justice Emem Madu – Breaking Judicial Barriers in Canada

Justice Emem Madu, a trailblazing Nigerian-born lawyer, has made history as a Justice in the Alberta Court of Justice, marking a significant milestone for African women in the diaspora. Her appointment to serve in the Edmonton Family and Youth Division is not only a personal achievement but a source of inspiration for the global African community.

A proud graduate of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Justice Madu began her legal journey in 1997, earning her law degree in 2001/2002. Her brilliance and dedication quickly became evident as she graduated from the Nigerian Law School with First Class Honours—a rare and prestigious achievement. Her pursuit of academic and professional excellence led her to Canada, where she earned a Master of Law (LL.M) degree from the University of Alberta in 2007.

Justice Madu’s commitment to excellence and integrity in the legal profession has been reflected throughout her illustrious career. She has held key roles across multiple law firms in Edmonton, including Wood Law Office, Laurier Law Office, and Tisel Law Office, where she showcased her legal acumen, regulatory knowledge, and unshakable ethical standards. She also worked as a regulatory compliance specialist at ATB Financials from 2010 to 2011, proving her versatility and dedication in both corporate and legal fields.

Her professional journey is matched by her strong family values. Justice Madu is married to her Law School classmate and distinguished public servant, Barrister Kelechi (Kaycee) Madu, KC, ECA—a former Alberta Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, former Deputy Premier, and founder of Kaycee Madu KC Law Firm. Together, they are raising three children—Ugonna, Chisom, and Adanaya Madu—with a shared commitment to leadership, service, and excellence.

Justice Emem Madu’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, brilliance, and the enduring impact of African women in shaping the global judicial landscape. Her recent appointment reflects not only her deep expertise and unwavering work ethic but also the growing recognition of African talent in international institutions.
