Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki met with Ambassador Xue Bing, China’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, at Adi Halo earlier today to deliberate on deepening bilateral relations and addressing pressing regional and international issues. The high-level meeting underscores the strengthening ties between Eritrea and China as they navigate the complexities of the Horn of Africa and beyond.

The talks focused on a broad range of subjects, including regional stability, developmental cooperation, and the implementation framework for initiatives outlined at the China-Africa Summit. Both leaders emphasized the critical importance of fostering peace, stability, and economic growth in a region often marked by geopolitical tensions and humanitarian challenges.

Ambassador Xue highlighted China’s unwavering commitment to advancing developmental partnerships with Eritrea, guided by priorities set by the Eritrean government. China’s approach, he noted, is rooted in mutual respect and alignment with local aspirations, ensuring that cooperative programs contribute meaningfully to Eritrea’s national development goals.

The meeting served as a platform to reaffirm shared perspectives on key regional and global issues. Ambassador Xue underscored the congruence of Eritrea’s and China’s views on the interconnected challenges facing the Horn of Africa, including security threats and economic vulnerabilities. He reiterated China’s readiness to work closely with Eritrea and its neighbors to promote sustainable development and enhance regional security.

Eritrea’s strategic position in the Horn of Africa, coupled with its independent foreign policy, has made it a pivotal player in shaping regional dynamics. The discussions between President Isaias and Ambassador Xue highlighted the importance of Eritrea’s active engagement in fostering regional cooperation, particularly in light of the growing significance of African partnerships on the global stage.

Ambassador Xue’s remarks to the Eritrean Press after the meeting further emphasized the depth of the Eritrea-China partnership. He stated that the alignment of their positions on regional and international matters reflects a shared vision for a stable and prosperous Horn of Africa. China’s role in facilitating peace initiatives and providing developmental support underscores its commitment to the long-term stability of the region.

A key area of focus during the discussions was the implementation of development programs agreed upon during the China-Africa Summit. These initiatives, aimed at boosting infrastructure, trade, and social development, are vital to Eritrea’s economic transformation. Ambassador Xue assured President Isaias of China’s dedication to delivering tangible outcomes through these collaborative efforts.

China’s involvement in Eritrea’s development is part of its broader strategy to enhance partnerships across Africa. The implementation framework discussed during the meeting includes measures to streamline project execution, ensure alignment with national priorities, and maximize the impact of Chinese investments in Eritrea. These steps aim to solidify Eritrea’s role as a key partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which seeks to enhance connectivity and economic integration across the continent.

Today’s meeting builds on Ambassador Xue’s earlier visit to Eritrea in April, reflecting a continuity of engagement that underscores the strategic importance of Eritrea-China relations. Both countries have consistently emphasized the value of sustained dialogue and collaboration in addressing shared challenges and seizing opportunities for mutual benefit.

The presence of high-ranking officials, including Eritrea’s Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and China’s Ambassador to Eritrea Li Xiang, further highlighted the significance of the meeting. Their participation underscored the commitment of both governments to fostering robust diplomatic and economic ties.
