Nigeria in National Mourning as Chief of Army Staff Passes Away

Nigeria mourns the passing of its Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, who died following a serious illness, the presidential press service announced. In a show of respect and solidarity, President Bola Tinubu has directed flags to be flown at half-mast nationwide for seven days to honor the late general’s dedicated service to the nation.

President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Lagbaja family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, reflecting on the general’s legacy and commitment to national security. Lt. General Lagbaja served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from June 2023 until his passing in November 2024.

The presidency also announced that President Tinubu has appointed Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Army Staff, entrusting him with the role of guiding Nigeria’s military forces during this period of transition.
