Kenya Targets Polluters in Major Nairobi River Cleanup

Kenyan Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has issued a stern warning to those polluting the waterway. Speaking during the Mazingira Day celebrations at Nairobi Arboretum on October 10, Duale vowed to hold industries, slaughterhouses, and waste collection companies accountable for their role in contaminating the river.

“What you see behind me is not a river,” Duale stated, underscoring the severity of pollution in the once pristine waterway. He announced a targeted campaign to clean up Nairobi River within the next 18 months, with strict penalties for violators. “We have put on notice companies, slaughterhouses, and Nairobi sewerage firms. We also want to know where garbage collectors are taking the trash.”

The Cabinet Secretary directed the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to trace and investigate garbage collection firms to ensure they are adhering to proper waste disposal practices. Duale stressed the need for transparency and accountability, particularly from the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, which he accused of contributing to the river’s degradation.

This initiative comes on the heels of President William Ruto’s recent relaunch of efforts to reclaim the Nairobi River. As part of this campaign, the “Climate Works Mtaani” initiative was introduced, a national climate action and livelihood program aimed at fostering environmental sustainability and creating jobs.

To further boost the cleanup operation, CS Duale announced plans to engage 20,000 young people in the Nairobi River restoration project. He emphasized that this effort is not only about reviving the river but also about creating a culture of environmental responsibility. “We will gazette the color coding of garbage collected in homes,” Duale explained, adding that all households will be required to separate organic, dry, and wet waste. NEMA will be tasked with tracking waste from homes and industries to designated dumpsites to ensure compliance.

“We will hold garbage collection companies accountable for where they dump waste,” he warned, urging the public to take a more active role in protecting the environment. Duale emphasized that the success of these initiatives depends on collective action, from individuals to corporations, to ensure a cleaner, greener future for Nairobi.

The Nairobi River cleanup project, which spans the entire stretch from Naivasha Road to Athi River at Z-Corner Juja Farm, is part of a larger national effort to address Kenya’s pressing environmental challenges. Duale, joined by Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi, highlighted the progress made in tree planting as part of the government’s broader climate action strategy. He noted that since the beginning of the year, Kenyans have planted 481 million trees. This achievement aligns with the government’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

Duale also touched on the impact of climate change in Kenya, pointing out the severe drought that has gripped the country in recent years. He noted that the drought, the worst in 40 years, has claimed at least 42 lives in Nairobi alone, underscoring the urgent need for environmental conservation.

Mazingira Day, formerly known as Utamaduni Day, was officially gazetted by President Ruto last year as part of a broader effort to intensify climate action in Kenya. The annual celebration is a call to action for all Kenyans to participate in safeguarding the environment and combating climate change. As the government ramps up its efforts to restore Nairobi River and promote sustainable practices, the success of these initiatives will ultimately depend on widespread cooperation and a commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.
