The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has seized 2 billion tramadol pills over the past 18 months, underscoring the scale of illicit drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria.

The agency said the seizures were made during operations targeting drug trafficking networks across the country as part of intensified efforts to curb the production, distribution and consumption of illicit substances.

According to the NDLEA, tramadol remains one of the most commonly abused prescription opioids in Nigeria, with its misuse linked to addiction, mental health disorders, road accidents and criminal activities.

The agency said ongoing enforcement operations are complemented by public awareness campaigns, intelligence-led investigations and partnerships with local and international law enforcement agencies to disrupt drug supply chains.

Public health experts say the widespread abuse of tramadol poses significant risks, particularly among young people, and have called for stronger preventive measures, expanded access to treatment and rehabilitation services, and stricter regulation of pharmaceutical distribution.

Security analysts also note that illicit drug trafficking can fuel organized crime and violence, making coordinated action between health authorities, security agencies and communities essential.

The NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening enforcement while encouraging the public to support efforts to combat drug abuse by reporting suspected trafficking activities and promoting community-based prevention initiatives.

The latest seizure figures highlight the continuing challenge of illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria and the need for sustained investment in law enforcement, public health interventions and rehabilitation programmes to address both the supply and demand for illicit drugs.
