Kremlin denies Putin is cut off from bad news after blogger’s criticism goes viral

The Kremlin has rejected suggestions that President Vladimir Putin is insulated from negative information, after a viral video by a Russian influencer accused officials of shielding him from the country’s real problems.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said authorities were aware of the widely circulated remarks and insisted that feedback on domestic issues does reach the president, pushing back on claims that he is cut off from critical reporting.

The comments follow a video posted by former reality TV star and influencer Viktoria Bonya, which has been viewed tens of millions of times online. In it, she alleged that Russian officials and intermediaries were failing to pass accurate information up the chain of command, leaving Putin unaware of the scale of public dissatisfaction and everyday problems.

Bonya’s message, while broadly supportive of Putin personally, warned that corruption, economic strain and poor crisis management were fuelling anger among citizens and creating a risk of social instability if left unaddressed.

The Kremlin response is part of a familiar pattern in which officials reject claims of information filtering or censorship around the president, arguing that Russia’s governance system ensures regular reporting from ministries, regional authorities and security services.

However, the episode has drawn attention because the criticism came from a figure with a large pro Kremlin following rather than traditional opposition voices, amplifying its reach and sparking debate inside Russian online spaces.

Analysts say the controversy reflects growing public frustration over economic pressures, sanctions, and the prolonged war in Ukraine, which have increasingly shaped domestic discourse even among previously loyal voices.

While the Kremlin has dismissed the suggestion that Putin is unaware of “bad news,” the viral nature of the criticism highlights the expanding role of social media influencers in shaping political narratives in Russia, even in an environment tightly controlled by the state.
