Nigeria has ordered an investigation into a deadly airstrike in the town of Jilli while defending the operation as a legitimate military action targeting insurgents.

The strike, carried out by the Nigerian Air Force, was aimed at positions believed to be used by extremist groups operating in the region, including Boko Haram and ISWAP. Authorities described Jilli, located near the Borno and Yobe state border, as a known insurgent enclave and logistics hub where militants have maintained a presence.

However, reports from residents and local sources indicate that the airstrike hit a busy market, resulting in significant civilian casualties. Estimates of the death toll vary, with dozens feared killed and many others injured, raising concerns about the accuracy of the intelligence used in the operation.

Despite the reports, military officials have defended the strike, stating that it was based on credible intelligence and intended to disrupt insurgent activity. They emphasized that such operations are a critical part of efforts to weaken militant networks that continue to carry out attacks across northeastern Nigeria.

At the same time, authorities acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations regarding civilian harm and announced the launch of a formal probe to determine what occurred. The investigation is expected to examine the targeting process, the intelligence used, and whether proper protocols were followed during the strike.

The incident has renewed scrutiny of Nigeria’s counterinsurgency operations, particularly the use of air power in areas where civilians and militants may be in close proximity. Human rights groups and observers have previously raised concerns about similar incidents, calling for greater accountability and improved safeguards to prevent civilian casualties.

The airstrike comes amid ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces to contain insurgent groups that have waged a prolonged campaign of violence in the region for over a decade. While military operations have achieved some gains, the conflict continues to pose serious humanitarian and security challenges.

The outcome of the investigation is likely to be closely watched, as it may influence both domestic confidence in the military and international perceptions of Nigeria’s approach to combating insurgency while protecting civilian lives.
