UK comedian Russell Brand trial on rape, sex assault charges delayed

The trial of British comedian and actor Russell Brand on multiple rape and sexual assault charges has been postponed, with proceedings now set to begin in October 2026 instead of June.

The delay follows the addition of new charges to the case, expanding the number of alleged victims and increasing the complexity of the trial. Brand now faces a total of seven charges, including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault, involving six women. The alleged incidents date back between 1999 and 2009.

Originally scheduled to begin in June at London’s Southwark Crown Court, the trial was pushed back after prosecutors brought forward additional allegations late last year. The court also heard that the extended scope of the case could lengthen proceedings to up to eight weeks, making the original timeline impractical.

Brand, 50, has pleaded not guilty to all charges and denies the allegations. He was not present at the most recent hearing but was represented by legal counsel.

The judge overseeing the case indicated that starting the trial in mid June could have caused logistical challenges, including difficulties in securing jurors over the summer holiday period and ensuring sufficient time to hear the expanded case.

Once a prominent figure in British entertainment, Brand has in recent years shifted away from mainstream media toward online commentary. The high profile case continues to draw significant public attention, with the upcoming trial expected to be closely watched both in the UK and internationally.
