Swiss prosecutors have expanded their criminal investigation into the deadly fire at a ski resort bar in Crans-Montana, adding the town’s mayor to the list of people under investigation, according to official documents.

The probe relates to the devastating blaze that broke out on New Year’s Day 2026 at the Le Constellation, a popular venue in the Alpine resort town. The fire killed 41 people and injured more than 100, making it one of the deadliest disasters in Switzerland in recent decades. Many of the victims were teenagers celebrating the New Year.

Investigators have now named Nicolas Féraud as a defendant in the case and have summoned him for questioning in April. Prosecutors are examining whether failures by local authorities contributed to the tragedy, including possible lapses in enforcing safety regulations.

The investigation initially focused on the bar’s French owners, who are suspected of offenses including negligent homicide. However, the probe has gradually widened to include municipal officials responsible for public safety oversight and fire inspections.

Questions have emerged about safety checks at the venue. Local authorities previously acknowledged that the bar had not undergone mandatory annual safety inspections for several years, raising concerns about whether regulations designed to protect customers were properly enforced.

Investigators believe the fire may have started when celebratory sparklers attached to champagne bottles ignited acoustic foam on the bar’s ceiling, rapidly spreading flames through the basement venue. Authorities are also examining whether emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and other safety measures were adequate.

If those under investigation are eventually convicted of negligent homicide or related offenses, they could face prison sentences of up to four and a half years under Swiss law.

The tragedy has deeply shaken Switzerland and raised questions about safety oversight in busy tourist resorts such as Crans-Montana, which attracts visitors from across Europe and beyond. Families of victims have also pushed for accountability and compensation as the investigation continues.
