Italy to Provide Air Defence Support to Gulf States Following Iranian Strikes, Says Meloni

Italy has announced plans to send air defence assistance to Gulf states after a series of missile and drone attacks attributed to Iran, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said. The move is aimed at strengthening regional security and protecting critical infrastructure amid escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf.

Speaking to reporters, Meloni emphasized that Italy’s support is intended to help Gulf partners enhance their defensive capabilities and deter further attacks on commercial vessels and strategic assets. The aid package is expected to include air defence systems and technical support, though detailed timelines and quantities have not been publicly disclosed.

The announcement comes in the wake of reported strikes on U.S.-linked oil tankers and other commercial vessels, which have raised concerns over the security of key maritime trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. European and Gulf leaders have increasingly expressed the need for coordinated measures to prevent further escalation.

Meloni also stressed that Italy remains committed to diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions while supporting allies in the region. The Italian government said it will continue consultations with both European partners and Gulf states to ensure the deployment of aid is effective and timely.

Security analysts say Italy’s move reflects growing European involvement in Middle East security and highlights the challenges of protecting global energy routes amid a period of heightened geopolitical volatility.
