In a demonstration of accountability and legislative integrity, the Senate Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs has declared that the screening of nominees for the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) was conducted with full adherence to due process, established parliamentary rules, and the traditions of the National Assembly.
Speaking after the screening session held on Tuesday, the Committee Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Yahaya, emphasized that the entire procedure was transparent, fair, and carried out in strict compliance with the legislative framework guiding such high-level appointments. He explained that the Committee took every necessary step to ensure that the process met the standards expected of the Senate, which remains committed to upholding the principles of justice, merit, and transparency in all national appointments.
“From my own experience and from what I know about things of this nature, we have done everything in accordance with the rules and traditions of the Senate and the National Assembly,” Senator Yahaya said, reaffirming the Committee’s dedication to following proper protocols.
The chairman noted that the Committee gave every nominee an opportunity to present themselves, speak on their qualifications, and respond to key questions relevant to the responsibilities of the Commission. Only candidates traditionally exempted from appearing were excused, in line with long-standing legislative conventions.
Senator Yahaya commended the impressive caliber of the nominees, stating that each individual demonstrated a high level of competence, professionalism, and technical knowledge required for service in the RMAFC, which plays a crucial role in ensuring equitable revenue distribution and fiscal management across Nigeria’s federal, state, and local governments.
“It is my pleasure to note that the candidates presented all possess the experience, the knowledge, and the background really required for the work of the Commission,” he added.
He further expressed confidence that once the Senate receives the Committee’s final report, it will give its full endorsement to the recommendations, paving the way for the nominees to assume their duties and contribute meaningfully to national fiscal reforms and effective revenue mobilization.
“We have done our part. The final confirmation lies with the Senate. We trust it will concur with our position,” Senator Yahaya concluded.
As the nation awaits the Senate’s official confirmation, public attention remains focused on the process, which many see as a litmus test for the legislature’s continued commitment to fairness, merit-based selection, and institutional transparency. The RMAFC nominees, once confirmed, are expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal architecture, promoting accountability, and ensuring that every level of government receives a fair share of national resources.
