American pastor Josh Sullivan was rescued unharmed in South Africa after being abducted during a church service in the township of Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, last week. Sullivan, a dedicated church planting missionary who relocated to South Africa in 2018 to establish a church serving Xhosa-speaking communities, was taken during a service at Fellowship Baptist Church amid an alarming rise in kidnappings across the country.

The dramatic rescue unfolded following a targeted operation by South Africa’s elite police unit, the Hawks. Acting on verified intelligence and a ransom demand, the unit swiftly moved in on the location where Sullivan was being held. According to Hawks spokesperson Avele Fumba, as officers approached the site, the kidnappers attempted to escape in a vehicle while engaging in a high-intensity shoot-out. The confrontation resulted in the fatal wounding of three unidentified suspects.

The incident comes against the backdrop of a significant increase in kidnappings in South Africa, with police statistics reporting a 264% surge over the past decade. Family members, along with local community leaders, had voiced desperate pleas for the pastor’s safe return after his abduction during a time of worship.

Pastor Sullivan’s ordeal underscores the security challenges currently facing the region, while his unharmed rescue serves as a powerful reminder of the commitment and tactical precision of South African law enforcement. His story continues to resonate as both a cautionary tale and an inspiring example of resilience and hope in the face of danger.
