The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, following approval by its Executive Committee. Chelle, a French-Malian and Ivorian tactician, replaces Finidi George, who resigned in June 2024, with Augustine Eguavoen serving as interim coach since then.

Chelle’s appointment comes after his successful tenure as head coach of Mali, where he led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The NFF described the decision as strategic in its quest to restore the Super Eagles’ dominance in African and global football.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has endorsed the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Mr. Éric Sékou Chelle as Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men national football team, Super Eagles,” read an official statement from the NFF.

The decision, finalized during the NFF’s meeting on January 7, 2025, marks the beginning of Chelle’s mission to lead Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His first major task will be securing qualification in the upcoming Matchdays 5 and 6 of the qualifiers, scheduled for March.

At 47 years old, Chelle brings extensive experience to the Super Eagles, with a track record of fostering disciplined and dynamic teams. His appointment signals a renewed focus on technical expertise and results-driven leadership.
