Nigeria international Calvin Bassey has shed light on his decision to represent the Super Eagles, despite being eligible to play for Italy, England, or Nigeria at the international level.

Bassey, currently playing as a defender for Fulham in the English Premier League, was born in Aosta, Italy, to Nigerian parents and later moved to England as a child. This unique background afforded him the option of playing for either Italy, England, or Nigeria, yet in 2021, he chose to commit his international future to Nigeria by accepting a call-up for the Super Eagles’ 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Reflecting on the moment that inspired his decision, Bassey revealed to Sky Sports, “When Nigeria played Argentina, they lost 2-1, but it was a great game. Messi—of course, Messi is Messi—scored an outrageous goal. It was something that stayed with me, a motivation to want to play for Nigeria and be on that big stage.”

Bassey’s admiration for the talent showcased in that 2018 World Cup match against Argentina was matched by his desire to make an impact on Nigeria’s team, contributing to its success and prominence on the global stage.

Now 24, Bassey has earned 28 caps with Nigeria and is setting his sights on helping the Super Eagles secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His decision to represent Nigeria not only strengthens the team but also highlights a growing trend among players of dual heritage who embrace their African roots, driven by a desire to be part of a thriving football legacy on the continent.
