President Bola Tinubu on Sunday paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, at the historic Iga Idunganran Palace on Lagos Island, where he received prayers and counsel from the traditional ruler.
The visit provided an opportunity for the monarch to pray for Tinubu, his administration and Nigeria, seeking divine guidance, peace and prosperity for the country. Oba Akiolu also offered counsel on issues concerning the nation and the welfare of Nigerians.
Tinubu was received by members of the royal household, while residents, supporters, All Progressives Congress members and other well wishers gathered along parts of Marina and Isale Eko as the presidential motorcade made its way to the palace.
The reception featured traditional drumming, praise singing and cultural displays, with crowds lining the streets to welcome the president.
The president was accompanied by Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo Olu and his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. Other political associates and dignitaries also joined the visit.
The engagement highlighted the continuing interaction between Nigeria’s political leadership and traditional institutions, which retain significant cultural and community influence despite having no formal role in the country’s constitutional system of government.
Oba Akiolu, as the traditional ruler of Lagos, has remained an influential voice on matters affecting the state and its communities. The visit also underscored the longstanding relationship between Tinubu and Lagos, where he served as governor from 1999 to 2007.
Tinubu’s visit to the palace came as part of his engagements with traditional rulers and other stakeholders following his return to Lagos from a working vacation.
The president’s presence attracted considerable public attention on Lagos Island, with residents gathering along major routes to see his motorcade.
The visit concluded with the president departing Iga Idunganran after receiving the monarch’s prayers and goodwill for his administration and the country.
