FCT Police Order Arrest, Prosecution of Vehicles Without Number Plates, Tinted Permits

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists operating vehicles without valid number plates or tinted glass permits as part of intensified security enforcement across Abuja.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, issued the directive following what the command described as the increasing use of vehicles with concealed or irregular identification, which police said could hinder the detection and tracking of criminal suspects.

In a statement issued Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the command warned motorists against driving vehicles without valid licence plates, tinted glasses without permits, or vehicles with concealed, defaced or deliberately faded number plates.

The warning also covers the use of fake diplomatic number plates and diplomatic plates by unauthorised persons within the FCT.

Sanusi said particular attention would be given to SUVs, except those operated by top government officials, as the command intensifies checks on vehicles that do not comply with identification and tinted glass regulations.

According to the commissioner, the directive was prompted by the proliferation of vehicles that have allegedly been used by criminal elements to evade detection, identification and arrest during or after the commission of offences.

“The Federal Capital Territory is a peculiar environment where the use of such vehicles poses significant security concerns, as it may hinder effective identification and tracking by law enforcement agencies,” Sanusi said.

He directed police officers across the FCT to intensify enforcement and ensure compliance with existing laws governing vehicle identification and the use of tinted glasses.

At the same time, the commissioner instructed officers involved in the enforcement exercise to act professionally and avoid using the operation as an avenue for extortion.

The command urged residents to cooperate with the police and report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines, 08032003913 and 08028940883.

The latest directive follows an earlier enforcement drive by the FCT Police Command against vehicles with tinted glasses, obscured number plates and improper registration. In that operation, the command said more than 30 vehicles had been impounded.

The police said the broader enforcement effort is intended to strengthen vehicle identification and support intelligence led policing in the nation’s capital, particularly by reducing opportunities for criminals to operate while concealing their identities.

The development also highlights the continuing security and regulatory concerns surrounding vehicle identification and tinted glass use in Abuja, where police authorities say effective tracking of vehicles is important to crime prevention and investigations.
