The Ooni of Ife has hosted members of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA), using the occasion to call for a peaceful and credible governorship election in Osun State ahead of the 2026 polls.
During the visit, the monarch emphasized the importance of peace, unity and political tolerance, urging political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns responsibly and avoid actions capable of undermining public order.
The Ooni offered prayers for a peaceful electoral process, expressing hope that the election would reflect the will of the people and contribute to the state’s continued stability and development.
Members of SWAGA said their visit was part of ongoing consultations with traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the South-West as political activities gather momentum ahead of the governorship election.
The meeting comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2026 contest, with stakeholder engagement expected to play a key role in shaping the pre-election environment.
Political analysts note that traditional rulers, while constitutionally non-partisan, often use their platforms to promote peace, dialogue and social cohesion during election periods. They say such interventions can help reduce political tensions and encourage issue-based campaigns.
Election observers have also stressed the importance of voter education, respect for the rule of law and adherence to the electoral guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free, fair and credible poll.
As Osun State moves closer to the 2026 governorship election, stakeholders continue to call on political actors to prioritize peaceful engagement, democratic values and the interests of the electorate throughout the electoral process.
