The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, received the Acting High Commissioner of Ghana, Dr. Gladys Mansa Yawa Feddy Akyea to discuss current developments in the relationship between both countries.
The key issue discussed was the prolonged commercial dispute between a Ghanaian investor and his Nigerian business counterpart, which pertains to the ownership of the River Park Estate along Airport Road, Lugbe. Speaking during the meeting, the Ghanaian Acting High Commissioner thanked the Permanent Secretary for granting the delegation an audience at very short notice and reaffirmed Ghana’s high regard for its longstanding relations with Nigeria.
The Acting High Commissioner noted that Ghana considered it important to engage through diplomatic channels to prevent the commercial dispute from escalating into an issue capable of generating unnecessary public tension between the two countries. She further expressed concern over the safety and welfare of Ghanaian nationals connected with the investment, alleging that recent developments surrounding the disputed property had heightened tensions, and therefore appealed for the intervention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating appropriate engagement with the relevant Nigerian authorities to ensure the protection of lives, property and investments while due legal processes continue.
In his response, the Permanent Secretary reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining the excellent bilateral relations that have existed between Nigeria and Ghana over the years. He assured the delegation that the Ministry attaches great importance to issues affecting the welfare of citizens of friendly countries residing in Nigeria and would carefully examine the concerns presented. The Permanent Secretary noted that while the dispute appears to be of a commercial and legal nature, the Ministry would study the information submitted by the Ghanaian side, prepare the necessary report and make appropriate recommendations for the consideration of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs. He further assured the delegation that relevant government institutions would be engaged, where necessary, through established diplomatic channels.
Ambassador Ahmed emphasised that Nigeria remains committed to the rule of law and the protection of legitimate investments, while encouraging all parties involved in the dispute to pursue peaceful dialogue and lawful mechanisms for the resolution of their differences.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue to work closely with the High Commission of Ghana and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the matter is addressed responsibly and in a manner that preserves the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement and cooperation in promoting peace, protecting citizens, encouraging investment and strengthening the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Ghana.
