Police in Rotterdam are investigating an overnight fire attack on a synagogue in the Dutch port city, authorities said on Friday.

Emergency services were called after a fire broke out at the Jewish place of worship during the night. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control and no injuries were reported.

Dutch police said early indications suggest the fire may have been deliberately set. Officers have launched an investigation and are reviewing security footage and gathering evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The synagogue, located in Netherlands’ second largest city, sustained damage but the extent of the destruction has not yet been fully disclosed.

Local authorities said additional security measures may be introduced around Jewish institutions as a precaution while the investigation continues.

The attack comes amid heightened concerns across parts of Europe about threats against religious sites, particularly as tensions linked to conflicts in the Middle East continue to influence security situations internationally.

Police have appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activity near the synagogue overnight to come forward with information that could assist the investigation.
