A Russian‑launched drone struck an empty passenger train in Ukraine’s southern Mykolaiv region, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said. The train had been pulled out of service for maintenance and was not carrying passengers when it was hit. However, a railway worker was injured in the attack, according to Ukrainian officials.
The strike is part of a wider pattern Ukrainian authorities reported dozens of Russian strikes on railway infrastructure in just the first days of March, with rolling stock, depots and bridges targeted. Railway workers and military personnel are working together to track drones and evacuate trains when threats are detected.
Russian forces have been increasingly targeting Ukraine’s transport network, particularly railways, as part of efforts to disrupt military logistics and civilian mobility. In related incidents in recent weeks and months, Russia used drones and missiles to hit railway lines, stations, and trains in various regions, leading to injuries and deaths in some cases.
These attacks come amid a broader escalation in long‑range drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and population centers, which Ukrainian officials and Western analysts describe as attempts to degrade the country’s resilience.
