European Central Bank policymaker François Villeroy de Galhau on Thursday downplayed a circulating rumour about ECB President Christine Lagarde, saying that it does not appear to be based on any reliable information.

Villeroy, governor of the Banque de France and a member of the ECB’s Governing Council, was asked about the speculation in interviews with French media. “I read a rumour about Christine Lagarde,” he said. “It does not seem like an information,” underlining that there is no substance to the talk and that observers should treat it with scepticism, according to Reuters.

He reiterated confidence in the ECB’s leadership and its monetary policy framework at a time of ongoing economic challenges in the euro area, including sluggish growth and inflation pressures that remain a key focus for the central bank. Villeroy’s remarks were intended to put to rest unfounded chatter and keep attention on the ECB’s policy mandate.

The ECB has been navigating a complex economic environment, balancing efforts to ensure price stability with concerns about growth in the bloc’s largest economies. Fed‑wide speculation and social media chatter about central bank leadership often accompany such periods of economic uncertainty, but officials including Villeroy have pushed back against unverified claims.

Villeroy’s comment reflects a broader effort by the ECB to maintain stability and confidence in its governance and communications as markets watch closely for any signals about future monetary policy moves.
