Students and the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Town took to the streets on Tuesday morning following reports of alleged sexual assault and harassment at Forest Hill residence. The protest began at the lower campus and culminated at Forest Hill, where students demanded justice, accountability, and improved safety measures for all residents.
Protesters also called for stronger action against perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV) on campus, emphasizing that students should feel safe in university residences. In response, the Forest Hill warden confirmed that the student accused of sexual assault would be removed from the residence, a decision welcomed by the SRC, which pledged to continue monitoring the situation. “Perpetrators have no place in our residences or our community,” the SRC said.
The SRC also revealed concerns that the alleged perpetrator holds a leadership position within the university. The council announced plans to initiate proceedings to have the student removed from their leadership role, stressing that student leaders should never endanger those they are meant to represent.
In addition, the SRC raised alarms over Rochester House, where a sub-warden accused of GBV, sexual harassment, and grooming was reappointed last year despite unresolved allegations. The council criticized the decision, calling for a review of the wardens’ selection process and accountability from the panel responsible.
To ensure students’ voices are heard and systemic change is achieved, the SRC and Rochester House committee will meet with residents to address concerns and work toward justice for those affected.
The day concluded with a peaceful night vigil honoring survivors of GBV, those who have lost their lives, and all who continue the fight for justice on campus.
This protest highlights the urgent need for stronger GBV policies, accountability, and safer campus environments at the University of Cape Town.
