With the tenure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, ending in December, calls are mounting for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize integrity and competence in appointing his successor. A pro-democracy group, the African Democratic Youth Congress (ADYC), has appealed to the President to ensure that the next INEC Chairman is a leader with proven character, vision, and dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, August 19, the Director-General of ADYC, Prince Muritala Haliru Dantoro, stressed that the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process hinges on the caliber of the individual chosen to head INEC. He cautioned the President against appointing someone with partisan leanings, urging him to “put Nigeria first” by selecting a candidate who places national interest above political or ethnic considerations.
According to Dantoro, “If the president is going to choose the next INEC chairman, he should put Nigeria first. Someone who has integrity, who has the interest of Nigeria first, and not given to primordial or partisan interests.” He emphasized that the leadership of INEC is crucial to Nigeria’s democratic journey, particularly as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The group also raised alarm over the increasing trend of vote buying during elections, describing it as both undemocratic and a criminal act that undermines good governance. ADYC urged the federal government to enforce stricter penalties against vote buyers and sellers to restore credibility to future elections. “We must understand that vote buying is not merely a transaction; it is a betrayal of our collective future. It is the tool that gives power to the wrong people – individuals who prioritize personal gain over public service and who will inevitably fail to bring desperately needed development to our communities,” Dantoro stated.
In addition, the group encouraged Nigerian youths to take active roles in leadership and governance rather than remain passive observers. The National Coordinator of ADYC, Mrs. Ruqayya Lamido Dodo, reiterated that the present generation of young Nigerians is tired of being sidelined in a country that belongs to them. She called on youths to rise, engage in political participation, and occupy leadership positions to strengthen democracy and drive national development.
As the countdown to December begins, all eyes are on President Tinubu to make a decision that could significantly shape the future of Nigeria’s electoral system and democracy. The appointment of the next INEC chairman, observers note, will either deepen citizens’ trust in elections or further cast doubt on the nation’s democratic credibility.
