Kenya is poised to make its global debut at the highly anticipated “Phygital Contenders: Abu Dhabi Football” tournament, scheduled to take place from July 25 to 29 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). The tournament marks a significant milestone for Kenya as it steps into the rapidly emerging world of Phygital sport a hybrid competition that merges traditional football with virtual gaming to create a dynamic and futuristic sporting experience.

Representing the country on this global stage, the Kenya Phygital team will compete against 23 other elite teams from around the world, all vying for qualification to the Games of the Future 2025, set for December in the UAE. Among the formidable opponents are defending champions Team Joga from the USA and the highly skilled LPT team from Venezuela.

Rony Lusigi, President of the Kenya Esports Federation, expressed immense pride and optimism about the team’s debut. He highlighted the growing popularity of Phygital sports among Kenyan youth and the potential for the national team to leave a lasting impression. “Phygital is a wonderful concept. It has gained a lot of traction among Kenyan youth. We are excited to be making our debut at the global stage. I have no doubt that our boys will make us proud,” Lusigi said.

The Abu Dhabi tournament serves as the final qualifying event before the Games of the Future and follows earlier competitions like Phygital Origins and Phygital Rivals, which have helped shape global rankings. Nis Hatt, CEO of Phygital International, emphasized the tournament’s importance, calling it a defining moment that will determine the top teams destined to represent the pinnacle of Phygital sport in 2025.

Organized by ASPIRE in collaboration with Ethara and Phygital International, the event underscores Abu Dhabi’s emergence as a global hub for cutting-edge sports and innovation. Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, noted the significance of hosting the tournament in the UAE capital, describing it as a milestone in reshaping the future of competitive sports.

Following this year’s edition in Abu Dhabi, the Phygital tournament will continue its international journey with a planned move to Astana, Kazakhstan in 2026.

With determination, talent, and a pioneering spirit, Kenya’s Phygital team is ready to make its mark and raise the national flag high on this exciting new frontier in global sports.
